What does VAT compliance mean for an online shop — and how does eCompliance ensure that you do not pay too much?
VAT compliance does not mean paying as much VAT as possible, but paying exactly what is legally due. For webshops, this covers the entire chain: pricing, B2B and B2C setup, invoicing, OSS or IOSS, inventory locations, marketplaces, and administration.
eCompliance analyses where you are liable for VAT, which rates apply, and when OSS or IOSS is or is not suitable. After that, we set up Shopify, WooCommerce, marketplaces, payment providers, and accounting so that the VAT runs correctly automatically — compliant, optimised, and without unnecessary issues.

What is IOSS and why is it so important for dropshipping and imports?
IOSS is an EU scheme for shipments up to €150 sent from outside the EU to consumers within the EU. With IOSS, the correct VAT rate of the customer's country is calculated at checkout and declared centrally via a single IOSS return. This prevents the carrier from charging import VAT, customs clearance fees, and handling fees again upon delivery.
eCompliance first assesses whether IOSS is actually required or beneficial for your model. Afterwards, we assist with the correct IOSS country, registration, webshop and payment provider configuration, and administration. This ensures your dropshipping or import model remains compliant, scalable, and as efficient as possible from an import VAT perspective.

How does eCompliance determine who the legal seller is in my dropshipping chain?
In a dropshipping model, multiple parties are often involved: the webshop owner, suppliers, an agent, fulfilment centre, and carrier. Who the legal seller is, is crucial for VAT, liability, and consumer rights.
eCompliance assesses all documents and facts: in whose name the invoice is made out, under whose name the webshop is operated, who publishes the general terms and conditions, who determines the prices, and who bears the entrepreneurial risk. We then align contracts, conditions, invoices, and VAT setup with that position.

Which legal services does eCompliance offer for webshops and e-commerce companies?
eCompliance offers a legal service package for e-commerce, webshops, platforms, and dropshipping. This includes general terms and conditions, privacy policy, cookie policy, and return policy, as well as contracts with suppliers, fulfilment partners, platforms, affiliates, influencers, and agencies.
In addition, eCompliance assists with data processing agreements under the GDPR, legal reviews of marketing campaigns, collaborations with co-founders and business partners, and resolving disputes and claims. The legal structure is aligned with the tax structure and VAT position, ensuring the complete setup remains consistent and defensible.

01
How does eCompliance help if I receive a letter or tax assessment from the Tax and Customs Administration?
If you receive a letter, audit notification or assessment from the Dutch Tax Authorities, eCompliance will first explain what is being requested or stated, which deadlines apply and what the potential consequences are.
Next, we assess your administration, structure and previous VAT returns. We determine whether the claim is justified, partly correct or incorrect and help with evidence, a substantive response and — if necessary — lodging an objection. By seeking assistance early on, you increase the chances of a swift and favourable resolution.
02
Can eCompliance help if I have been working on intuition for years and am now worried about an audit?
03
How far back can the tax authorities go with VAT or IOSS errors?
01
Can eCompliance help me with setting up an international structure, for example in Hong Kong, the UK or Dubai?
Yes. eCompliance supports entrepreneurs considering an international structure, such as a Hong Kong limited company or a British entity. We do not only look at the legal form and local taxes, but especially at the connection with your EU activities, VAT position, IOSS usage, and relationship with the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration (Belastingdienst).
eCompliance does not work with standard tax haven solutions, but with well-founded structures with real substance. We help to clarify what is required for a defensible structure and what this means for management, bank accounts, contracts, and administration.
